My name is Lucretia, I live in Southwestern Ontario, Canada and I'm 21 years old. I know that seems a little vague right? Like I am just a normal person starting a blog about themselves, which is not only self centred its BORING!!!! And that is why I started with a post titled "A Little About Me" because there is more to me than my name, age, and the part of the world I live in; there is much much more, and one thing in particular seems to be what I get singled out for. I know it is something I have, and it has helped me grow into the person I am today, but it DOES NOT define me - and that is why I started this blog.
I have Cerebral Palsy - Mild Spastic Dipelgia (I hope I spelt that right, and I a horrible speller - so I apologize in advance for anything I may misspell from here forward) - I am very high functioning and mobile, I have never really had to use a wheelchair (yet - cross my fingers I won't for a very long time) but I have worn the Twister Cables (as far as I know I was the first person in my area to try the twister cables), AFO's, Night Splints and had to use a walker until I was about 4 because I couldn't get up on my own without crawling to a fence or tree or coach or whatever was around to help, plus I got knocked over really easily. I had botox once and a 6 part surgery when I was 13 - which they wanted to do when I was 6 but my parents and I refused. I have always been considered a guinea pig when it comes to medical things, I was the first person to do a Gate Clinic Analysis at the Thames Valley Children's Centre in London with the Twister Cables, and from putting off the surgery for so long and diligently doing Physio 5 - 6 times a week at home and going to Physiotherapy at least once a week. There is a ton of support out there for children with Cerebral Palsy and without it I would not be where I am today - so thank you to Dr. Carey, the Thames Valley Children's Centre, and most of all the former Children's Rehabilitation Centre now called the John McGiveney Children's Centre, and last but certainly not least, up there with the Rehab Centre all the support workers who have ever worked with me, ESPECIALLY my Grandma and my Parents.
Clarification: I said earlier that this blog was not defined by one aspect of my life and with that I think I implied that my blog would not primarily focus on my DisAbility but the reason I wanted to start this blog was to shed light on how accommodating and supporting the world is when you are a child but how that doesn't follow you into adulthood. So although, this will be my primary focus I also want to show the world and others like me, that there is more to us then our DisAbility and with determination and perseverance we can become whatever we want to be.
Now that I've cleared that up, I will say I am going to have posts about everything from applying to University and College as a Handicapped (I don't like this word or any other word - disabled etc, but I don't know what else to use) individual, applying for addition funding, to finding additional support wherever you are, to answering any quires or concerns you may have about anything in life, school, the real world, really anything at all. And through my personal examples of my trials and tribulations, my love for life, fashion, beauty, shopping, learning, and helping others I hope that you will not only learn something from me whether it be how to bargain shop, or hem your own jeans in a hurry, or find a great read. But I also hope you will share your experiences with me and see me as your confidant with whom you can relate and bring your problems to.
Yours Truly,
LucretiaFashionista
